Asbestos Abatement

Let the professionals remove asbestos from your home or business!

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals that share the same fibrous nature. Asbestos fibres are flexible yet resistant to heat, electricity and chemical corrosion. Asbestos is an effective insulator and can be mixed into cloth, paper, cement and other materials to make them stronger.

Microscopic asbestos fibres cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, and exposure does not cause any immediate symptoms which makes it easy for a person to unknowingly inhale asbestos dust. Once asbestos fibres enter the body, they never dissolve, and the body has extreme difficulty expelling them. Over time, trapped asbestos fibres can cause inflammation, scarring and eventually genetic damage to the body's cells. Asbestos related illnesses often take 20 or more years to develop.

Asbestos fibres most often accumulate in lung tissue and in the membrane lining the lungs called the pleura. Benign asbestos related diseases include asbestosis, pleuritis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which make it difficult for patients to breathe. Asbestos also causes malignant diseases such as lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma. It is considered the number one cause of occupational cancer in the world.

There are an estimated 3,000 products that contain asbestos. The products most commonly found in homes and buildings include:

  • Drywall joint compound
  • Plaster
  • Vermiculite attic insulation
  • Boiler and pipe insulation
  • Adhesives
  • Cement pipes, siding and wallboard
  • Vinyl floor tiles and vinyl sheet flooring
  • Electrical wiring insulation
  • Roofing felt and shingles
  • Sprayed fireproofing

All workers have the required training necessary for the specific type of Asbestos Abatement to be performed. This includes Asbestos Awareness Training, Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU) 253W Certification for Workers and 253S Certification for Supervisory staff. We work with independent 3rd party environmental consulting companies when required to provide additional services including a detailed project scope, site inspections and clearance air testing upon completion of abatement activities. The involvement of the 3rd party consultant can be customized based on your individual project needs.

Element Environmental is experienced in the safe removal of Asbestos containing materials. All Asbestos Abatement is completed according to Ontario Regulation 278/05.
